Background

The Road To Your New Licence

At first glance, the road to becoming an LGV / HGV / PCV Driver can appear complicated and confusing. Here at Andy Swan Driver Services, we can explain the whole process effortlessly. We can book and manage the whole process from start to finish, which takes you from your initial medical, through your theories and finishing with your practical and MOD 4.

Licence Acquisition

The first part of the process is to gain your provisional entitlement, which requires a medical to be completed and your forms sent off to DVLA.

We arrange the medical on your behalf and assist with the form completion to ensure a smooth application.

DVLA will then process your application and return your licence to you. You can check if the entitlement has been granted using the link below

Check your Provisional Entitlement.

Module 1 – Theory
Multiple Choice Test and Hazard Perception Test carried out by the DVSA at an approved test centre.

Whilst waiting for the provisional entitlement to be added to your licence, you can start to practice for your theory tests.

CPC Part 1A Multiple Choice Test. 100 multiple-choice questions. You need to answer 85 correctly to pass.

CPC Part 1B Hazard Perception Test. It consists of 19 video clips with 20 scorable hazards (1 video has 2 hazards); each hazard is scored from 0 to 5, so 100 points are available. Therefore, to pass, you need to score 67 out of 100.

We offer support and advice to help you through your theories along with an online training portal for easy learning. We also have a drop-in learning centre onsite to assist with your theory study.

Once you have passed your theories, you can then proceed to your practical driver training.

Module 2 – CPC Case Studies
This part of the CPC is usually completed simultaneously with Module 1.

CPC Part 2 Case Studies Test. The test comprises seven case studies that you go through on a computer. The case studies are short stories based on circumstances you may encounter in your job. You’ll be asked between 6 and 8 multiple-choice questions on each case study. The pass mark is 40 out of a possible 50.

Module 3 – Driving
Practical. Consists of 2 parts.
Part 3A Reversing Exercise.
Part 3B On Road Driving.

Once you have successfully passed your theories, you are then ready for your practical training and tests, which consist of Module 3A (your reverse manoeuvre) and Module 3B (your on-road examination).

Part 3A

We have our own off-road reversing area, and this part of the test is done in-house.

If you are taking your CAT C+E, you will also be asked to demonstrate coupling and uncoupling a trailer.

Part 3B

On-road driving with a DVSA Examiner consists of 2 parts

  • 1 hour of practical road driving, including 10 minutes of independent driving.
  • HGV show me tell me questions.

Module 4 – CPC Practical
CPC Part 4 Practical Demonstration.

This test is conducted at our training facility in Wrexham and is the final test required to achieve your initial CPC. On the day, you will receive training covering such areas as:

  • Walk around checks
  • Ability to prevent physical risks
  • Border crossings
  • Load dynamics
  • How to assess emergency situations
  • Load and vehicle security
